Observational Drawings

My initial observational drawings were simply tonal and colour pencil studies of the portrait photography I had taken. I used the same drawing techniques that I always have and felt that the improvement in my drawing skills truly shows in this project.

Tonal: The first of my observational drawings were these two tonal pieces below. Symbolically, they are a comparison between the innocence and natural beauty of the youthful mind and the result of exposure to cynicism which has poisoned the mind. It is now used as protection from future condemnation and disappointment. I used a smooth technique to display the smoothness of the skin. I also find it gave the image an angelic feel. And for the second piece I believe this angelically smooth look is a stark contrast to the smears of black. This realistic style of drawing really brings life to the subject, particularly the eyes.
